I now understand that this blog should be a forum to discuss points from the readings and expand on topics introduced in class, not a place were I ramble on about being new to the city of Melbourne and the world of internet publishing. So…
I just completed the Dreamweaver exercise (whew!). What a useful tutorial! I wish I had had this kind of guidance when learning the CMS at my last job. I love how the internet enables the user to actually follow along with written instruction. And this tutorial took the lesson to another level by adding space to post questions and comments. It is encouraging to know that if you run into a problem, there’s someone to help solve it (and in this case, oftentimes the person who wrote the instructions!).
I do have one complaint though. The multiple column format of the tutorial is a pain for laptop users. When screen space is limited and multiple windows and programs are necessary, it is nice to work with pages that can be made much smaller and still be totally readable and functional. It must be possible—you can view most pages on an iPhone!
Random tidbit: I’ve been using the standard dummy text (the lorem ipsum dolor text used at the beginning of the Dreamweaver tutorial) for years and never knew what it meant. Here’s the translation, courtesy of good ol’ Wikipedia, if you’re interested.
And another random report: I googled “Jon Varese” thinking there might be something interesting to report on the author of the Dreamweaver tutorial—hey, the “About the Author” chunk says he’s also been a clown and a funeral attendant. Didn’t find much other than his website.
